Discussion Group Field Trip:  April 23

Instead of a monthly meeting in April to discuss a book or an article, on April 23rd we will make a field trip to  BonTon Farms  in Dallas. We plan to meet at the Arapaho Center Station (1051 N. Greenville Avenue) at 10 am, carpool to the Farms, and return to the Arapaho Center Station by 1:30pm.  In addition to the Farm itself, there is a Farmer's Market and cafe where we will have lunch.

In BonTon’s words, their foci are -

  • CULTIVATING GROWTH in South Dallas.  We’re so much more than an urban farm. Our Market and community-building efforts are helping our residents prosper in every aspect of their lives. Find out how we’re working to be a source of hope and nourishment to this former food desert.
  • Planting SEEDS OF CHANGE  Just like seeds, people need the right nutrients to grow to their full potential. That’s why we’ve created programs that holistically lift up this community by addressing health, wellness, and housing challenges.
  • OUR FARM  We’re cultivating a vibrant and sustainable urban farm that utilizes the most innovative urban gardening techniques.

For a fascinating look at how this South Dallas community has maintained its neighborhood spirit against the odds, see the video

This is a particularly challenging election season for Texas voters. Over the next couple of months, we will have as many as three elections in our area:
  • May 7 – Local Election plus proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution
  • May 24 – Primary Runoff Election
  • June 18 – Local Runoff Election (if needed)
Registration deadlines, early voting dates, and mail ballot deadlines will be close – and in some cases may overlap – for these three elections. We expect a lot of confusion on the part of local voters.

We urge you to regularly visit our website  and to encourage your friends and neighbors to do so as well. We will update information about each of these important elections as information becomes available. Our website not only has dates and deadlines, but also has Q&As with candidates, pro/con Voters Guides on ballot propositions, and links to new district maps.

Remember – every vote counts!   YOUR vote counts!!!!
